Website Center for Online Safety and Liberty
Empowering individuals and communities to thrive online by building safer spaces, fostering creativity, combating harm, and championing digital rights and freedom.
The Center for Online Safety and Liberty (COSL) is looking for a volunteer Blog Editor to help shape and grow our blog, commissioning and writing articles on a wide range of topics concerning online rights, safety, privacy, freedom of expression, and digital civil liberties.
The Blog Editor will help develop the editorial direction of the blog, identify timely and interesting topics, commission contributions from writers and experts, and produce original articles where appropriate. This is an opportunity for someone with a strong interest in digital rights and online policy to help build COSL’s public voice and engage a global audience.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and maintain an editorial calendar covering timely issues in online rights, safety, privacy, freedom of expression, and related areas.
- Identify emerging issues, developments, campaigns, research, and debates that would be of interest to COSL’s audience.
- Commission articles from researchers, advocates, lawyers, technologists, activists, and other contributors.
- Develop relationships with potential contributors and build a network of writers and subject-matter experts.
- Write original articles, commentary, interviews, and other editorial content for the COSL blog.
- Edit and fact-check submissions for accuracy, clarity, accessibility, and consistency with COSL’s editorial standards.
- Work with COSL project leads and subject-matter experts to identify stories and perspectives arising from the organisation’s projects and activities.
- Ensure that content reflects COSL’s commitment to human rights, freedom of expression, privacy, and online safety.
- Coordinate with COSL’s communications and social media volunteers to promote published articles and maximise their reach.
- Monitor engagement with published content and identify opportunities to improve the blog’s reach and impact.
- Contribute ideas for new editorial formats, including interviews, explainers, opinion pieces, project updates, and collaborative articles.
Qualifications
- Strong passion for digital rights, freedom of expression, privacy, and online safety.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to explain complex issues clearly to a general audience.
- Demonstrated ability to identify interesting stories and develop engaging editorial content.
- Experience writing, editing, journalism, communications, advocacy, research, or a related field.
- Demonstrated ability to build networks and effectively engage stakeholders.
- Familiarity with social media campaign management, advocacy tools, and digital organising.
- Comfort with collaborative international environments and cross-cultural communication.
- Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and take initiative.
- Sound editorial judgment and attention to accuracy and detail.
Experience with digital rights, technology policy, online safety, civil liberties, journalism, or advocacy is desirable, but enthusiasm and demonstrated ability are more important than formal qualifications.
Location
Remote. COSL is an international organisation, and volunteers may be based anywhere in the world.
Commitment
Part-time, volunteer — approximately 5–10 hours per week.
The role is flexible and can be structured around the volunteer’s availability. The Blog Editor will work primarily asynchronously, with occasional meetings with COSL staff, project leads, and other volunteers.
What you’ll gain
- Professional development and practical experience in digital-rights communications and editorial work.
- The opportunity to develop a portfolio of published work on important and emerging technology and civil-liberties issues.
- Networking opportunities within global digital-rights, online-safety, technology, and civil-liberties communities.
- Opportunities to work with researchers, advocates, lawyers, technologists, and activists from around the world.
- Experience developing editorial strategy and managing contributors in an international nonprofit environment.
- A meaningful opportunity to contribute to COSL’s mission of protecting online freedom, safety, privacy, and human rights worldwide.
