The Fan Refuge project is about the power of imagination and self-expression. By embracing artistic and creative freedom and our values of tolerance and respect, Fan Refuge encourages creators to push boundaries, explore new ideas, and share their passions with a supportive community.
But Fan Refuge is also about safety and support. The tools and policies that we’re developing will protect users from exposure to unwanted or triggering content, and discourage bullying and call-outs.

What are we fundraising for?
We’ve been working on the Fan Refuge code already, but here are the components that are still incomplete, and the goals that we want to reach to complete their development, testing, and implementation on the Fan Refuge website.
| INITIAL GOAL #1: $1000 Dead Dove is a content warning system, that hides potentially offensive content behind an informative warning—while also allowing users to override those defaults and establish their own content preferences. But currently, it’s mostly suitable for website administrators. Your donation will help to make it more user-friendly for all future users of Fan Refuge. | STRETCH GOAL #2: $2000 If we reach $2000, we’ll also fund the development of monetization features for Fan Refuge, including CreatorTips which is a simple system for users of Fan Refuge to define and promote their own tip jars. By avoiding a centralized payment system (think Patreon, OnlyFans), we avoid the need to take fees, and limit the possibility of financial censorship. | STRETCH GOAL #3: $3000 If we reach $3000, your support will allow us to complete our work on CheckStep integration, allowing Fan Refuge to scale. CheckStep is a sophisticated content moderation platform that balances AI and human moderation. This will enable us to ensure that content on Fan Refuge is tagged appropriately, and that illegal content is kept out. |
What you’ll receive in exchange
As a not-for-profit fan community project, Fan Refuge doesn’t have big investors to fund its development. That’s why we are relying on you to help us complete the open source components that we’re using as the foundation for the Fan Refuge website. All donors will receive an exclusive invitation to become our site’s first beta users.
