The Center for Online Safety and Liberty (COSL) is a nonprofit incubator supporting independent digital rights projects that advance safety, liberty, and human rights online. We champion evidence-based approaches to online safety, protect creative expression, and promote responsible platform governance.
Role Overview
COSL is seeking two volunteer Board of Directors members to join our oversight team. Board members provide governance, strategic guidance, and accountability for COSL’s operations and projects, ensuring that the organization remains aligned with its mission. This is a volunteer role, ideal for individuals committed to digital rights, human rights, and nonprofit governance.
Key Responsibilities

Attend quarterly Board meetings (remotely) and any special meetings as needed.

Review and approve annual reports, financial statements, and major organizational decisions.

Exercise oversight of COSL’s sponsored projects by receiving regular updates and ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.

Provide guidance and advice on strategic direction, risk management, and organizational policies.

Participate in discussions on governance, compliance, and ethical standards.
Desired Qualifications

Strong commitment to COSL’s mission and values, including digital rights, freedom of expression, and evidence-based approaches to online safety.

Experience in nonprofit governance, legal oversight, finance, or relevant policy fields is valued.

Ability to contribute to discussions with thoughtful analysis and independent judgment.

Comfort with remote collaboration and online meetings.

Integrity, discretion, and an understanding of fiduciary duties for nonprofit board members.
Time Commitment

Quarterly board meetings, typically 1–2 hours each.

Periodic review of materials and participation in ad hoc discussions, approximately 3–5 hours per quarter.
